Football programs at HBCUs are slowly getting their shine on and showcasing their talents playing major conferences this season. Jackson State and Alabama State are amongst the list of top contenders in the SWAC this season.
Yesterday, the football rivals went head to head in the East Showdown in Montgomery, Alabama, among the record crowd was Alabama native and NFL Hall of Famer Terrell Owens. Alabama State began the game with a breakthrough start, however they were not able to manage the pressure put onto their offensive line. On the other hand, it was the Tigers' consistence and adjustments made throughout the game that held off the Hornets in what would result in a JSU victory.
Jackson State beat Alabama State 26-12.
The showdown between the Tigers and the Hornets would end in a midfield confrontation post game between the coaches. In a post game conference, ASU coach Robinson would explain his dismay for JSU coach Sanders following the postgame handshake.
"I thought it was alot of disrespect throughout the week", said Robinson, "We didn't talk during the pregame...he (Sanders) walked throughout our whole huddle in the end zone...I thought that wasn't classy at all. So in the post game, don't expect me to give you the Obama bro hug."
Coach Sanders clapped back to the ASU coach, stating he didn't mean anything personal when he ran around the field pregame as it was a tradition of his. He went on to say the team's late arrival to the field interrupted the team's preparation process. Sanders stated he felt Robinson was resentful as he thought this team would win the game.
"I think he thought he was going to win the game, I don't know why he would've ever thought that.." Sanders said.
Sanders, brushing off the shake off, stating he felt like he did his job helping in the record sell out crowd homecoming game for Alabama State.
"I think I was a good darn salesman leading up into the week...I thought I did my job."
The differences between the two coaches don't seem like they will be resolved in the near future. Regardless of the back and forth, Jackson State will remain undefeated and number one in SWAC. The Tigers will continue to fight for their undefeated status as they take on the Bethune Cookman Wildcats in Jacksonville, FL on Saturday.
We all know Coach Sanders doesn't hold back on his opinions and thoughts because he always has time to let you know. "So if I'm not SWAC, then who is? Because I got time today!."
